Chapter Twenty-Four
OLEANDER - DANI 2023
Dani woke to the sounds of an argument. This time the voices came from her ensuite. She threw back the sheet and got out of bed. Before she reached the bathroom, Brett took her arm. Heâd stayed with her during the night.
Bonnie barked but wouldnât go near the door.
âIâll go,â Brett whispered, as something crashed and shattered on the tiled floor. He hurried into the room. âThereâs no one here,â he called out to Dani.
âYou heard the voices too though, didnât you?â she asked, as she joined him. A perfume bottle had been broken and its liquid spilled all over the bathroom floor.
âI didnât hear them but who smashed your perfume bottle?â Brett frowned. âAt least, this room is going to smell beautiful for days.â
âIt had to be Eloise and the other ghost,â Dani said.
âDo you really believe that?â
âA month ago, I probably wouldnât have but now⦠I donât have any other explanation.â
âWas the bottle near the edge of the cabinet?â
âNowhere near the edge,â Dani assured him.
âI donât know what weâre going to do if two ghosts start smashing things. Anyway, Iâll get a bucket and mop and a dustpan to put the glass in.â
When Brett had gone, Dani looked around her. She couldnât see a ghost, but she could sense something. âIs that you Eloise?â she asked, thinking she must be stupid. âWho are you arguing with?â
No reply came. Of course, no reply would be given. Dani spoke to thin air.
She went back into the bedroom, waiting for Brett to return. Then she halted. Dani stared at the photo of Eloise and Emily on the bottom of the bed. Dani hadnât put it there.
âIs it Emily you argued with?â
The door opened and Brett came in. âWhatâs that?â he asked, indicating what she held in her hands.
Dani showed him the photo. âItâs of Eloise and Emily. I found it on the end of the bed when I walked back in here. It wasnât there before.â
âBloody hell,â Brett muttered. âDo you think Eloise put it there?â
âI canât explain it any other way,â Dani said.
